After three successful Gender Equality Summits, Global Compact Network India, the Indian Local Network of the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), New York, organised the fourth edition of the Summit on 9th -10th March 2021. Smriti Zubin Irani, Union Cabinet Minister, Ministry of Women & Child Development, GOI & Ministry of Textiles, delivered the Inaugural Address where she highlighted the achievements of various government initiatives undertaken for benefitting the women of the country. The theme of this year’s summit was, “Covid And New Gender Equations : Adversity to Opportunity”.
Despite being organised virtually and irrespective of different time zones, the summit was successfully attended by the speakers across the globe. Shabnam Siddiqui, Executive Director, UN-GCNI actively promoted greater participation of women for the same.
The summit witnessed the participation of big global organisations like ONGC, Deloitte India, Salesforce India, Modi Enterprises, SAP Labs India, Bombay Stock Exchange, Master Card, RELX Group, Capegemini Technology Services India, Julie Ann Wrigley Global Institute of Sustainability, Aditya Birla Education Trust, Ashok Leyland, ICMR-National Institute of Virology, Edelgive Foundation, SM Sehgal Foundation, Aspire for Her Foundation, SheThePeople TV, KPMG India, Uber, TCS, Zensar Technologies, Women Ask for More, IOCL, UNGC-Brazil, Mauritius National Assembly and BKT Media Pvt. Ltd. The Founders, MDs, CEOs, Global Heads, Activists, Academicians and Civil Society Leaders of the above organisations discussed about the collective responsibility and exploring pathwaystowards gender inclusive outcomes in the society and specificallythe workforce.
Vaishali Sinha, Chair, GCNI GES 2021, Chief Sustainability Officer, ReNew Power & Founding Chair, ReNew Foundation took up on the forefront presenting the overview of the theme and subject both the days. Hon’ble Minister Smriti Irani also mentioned Vaishali Sinha’s Gender Digital Divide aspect in her Inaugural Message.
Shilpa Bhawana, Creative Director, BKT Media Pvt. Ltd. was also one of the distinguished speakers of the Summit acting as the binding ingredient of the two-day Summit with the her creative presentation skills as Master of Ceremony. Mentioning about the Prime Minister’s initiatives for women empowerment, she said, “This is not just the time that She should stand for Her, it is the time that He should stand for Her. And, Hon’ble Prime Minister is the perfect example of this.”
Commenting on the contribution of women during the Covid-19 pandemic, The President, GCNI & Chairman, ONGC Group of Companies, Shashi Shanker said, “promoting women as key drivers of growth, monetizing the skills of women workforce will address gender inequality and shall go a long way towards realizing a quicker ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ in the post-COVID-19 recovery phase.”
Other distinguished speakers at the Summit also advocated greater opportunities for women and more coordinated involvement of Governments, private sector, not-for-profits and communities, as drivers and enablers of social change.
The two-day Summit was meant to address the challenges and identify the solutions for a gender neutral future. The seed of this Concept of Gender Equality Summit was sown four years back by the Ex-Executive Director of UN-GCNI Late Sh. Kamal Singh; that has now turned out to be a global platform for the igniting discourse of gender neutral society. Though he has achieved eternal peace, but the team associated with the Summit are now taking forward the baton. This was the first time Gender Equality Summit has taken place without his presence but his blessings will always be with the platform, with Gender Equality Summit.
