“Thank You Nurses” – Says the world

Nurses are the crucial link in the healthcare sector. 12th May is celebrated as the International Nurses Day across the worlds. Since 1965, the International Council of Nurses (ICN) has been celebrating this day on the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing. It is celebrated every year to appreciate the efforts and contribution of nurses in the medical profession. This year’s theme is Nurses: A Voice to Lead – A vision for future healthcare.

Today in this time of Pandemic all the Doctors, Nursing Staff and Medical Staff across the world are really working hard to bring the lives back on track.

Our history is filled with many such nurses whose dedication and selfless efforts has led to a revolution in the profession of medicine. On the occasion of International Nurses Day, let us dive into the history and look upon a few of the Nurses who created history with their service.

  1. Florence Nightingale

Also known as “The Lady with the Lamp”, Florence Nightingale brought a revolution in medicine through her contributions. She gained prominence through her efforts in saving the lives of thousands of wounded soldiers during the Crimean War. During this time, she observed that the soldiers die largely due to unhygienic sanitary conditions. She decided to somehow improve the survival rate of the soldiers. It was her research and knowledge which changed the scenario and reformed the medical profession. Much of our current sanitation procedures are her contributions. She is the one who improved the reputation of nursing.

2. Clara Barton

Clarissa Harlowe Barton, famously known as Clara Barton never attended a nursing school but her dedication to serve the people and her country introduced her to nursing. She was a teacher but adapted nursing during American Civil War where she provided personal assistance to the wounded soldiers. Her humanitarian work brought her much recognition which ultimately resulted in close contact with US Presidents Rutherford B Hayes and Chester Arthur. It was in May 1881, when American Red Cross was established by Clara Barton to provide emergency assistance to not just war but crises like natural disasters.

3. Dorothea Dix

She is known for her contributions in mental illness. The conditions of the mental patients might not be the one we see today if Dix hadn’t stood up for them. She witnessed the inhuman conditions of the mental patients in Massachusetts, where they were locked up, beaten and tortured. It was her rigorous efforts that pushed the American State Legislatures towards creation of asylums in the country.

4. Mother Teresa

Born as Anjezë Gonxhe Bojaxhiu, in the Ottomon Empire, Mother Teresa was considered synonymous to God by the poor and the downtrodden people of the society. She began her missionary work in India in 1948. After learning the basic nursing skills, she started helping the poor, homeless and unwanted people of the society. In 1950, Teresa founded the Missionaries of Charity. At a time when leprosy was a dreadful disease and its patients were considered untouchables, the Charity provided food, support and medical attention to the needy. She believed in providing the opportunity of a dignified death to all.

Today, the world is going through a tough time and so is our medical sector. The pandemic has put the entire medical fraternity into a warzone where everyday thousands of people are battling for their lives. The inescapable pain of loosing their loved ones have shattered the families and those who have survived are going through a mental trauma. The exhausting working conditions and constant exposure to pandemic patients poses a serious threat to our nurses and other medical staff. But, this never broke their true spirit of serving the society. And, like the theme of the day, nurses & medical staff are the true leaders of healthcare and undoubtedly, the healers of the society.
